Welcome to the Timber & Classic Boat Division
For those who love good company and messing about in boats!
Got $20 and a wooden spoon? Then you’re eligible to join! All boats are welcome.
This division was created in 1988 by a number of club members who shared an interest in timber boats. It is a division rich in maritime history, with yachts, Halvorsens, motor launches, cruisers, converted trawlers, and crayboats and more.
In 2023 it became the Timber and Classic Boats Division, but the membership is still open to all who would like to join, regardless of which materials your boat is constructed.
Why join? A fun activity is held most months of the year. Some of these are water based activities such as raft-ups in Pittwater and Broken Bay with beach barbecues, feasts, swimming, navigation trials, prawns, wine, cocktails and great company. Some of our boats join in the RMYC parades for Australia Day and the opening of the sailing season. We organise information evenings to hear about members’ trips or to follow their renovation journeys. Many of us also attend the Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, either by boat or plane.
Other activities are more land-based to include those members who no longer have boats and these include barbecues, lunches in restaurants, ferry trips, as well as meals and activities at the club. The Christmas Lights on the Marina is a fun night with Santa, live music, great food and decorated boats. Sometimes we go camping/ caravanning and we have traditionally have a long lunch on a beautiful property at Laguna. In fact the long lunch lasts all weekend!
The division also runs the annual Timber Boat Festival where entrants from all over Sydney show their timber boats at the club during the first weekend in November. Thousands of people come to explore the wide variety of boats and chat with the owners, who vie for numerous prizes. The weekend is a hive of activity with social functions, a children’s art competition, guest speakers and businesses who are showcasing their latest products. Most of the money raised goes to support local charities.
You can join this fun loving group for only $20!
The committee meets on the third Thursday of the month, at 6pm followed by dinner. All members are welcome to join the committee, attend the meeting or just visit for dinner. We’d love to hear your ideas for new activities or feedback on old ones.
