RMYC Broken Bay – Mini Mariners FAQ

About the Program

The RMYC Broken Bay Mini Mariners Division is home to Pittwater’s largest fleet of the exciting Open Skiff (by Bic) — one of the world’s fastest-growing sailing dinghy classes.

Our Summer Sailing Program follows the global Open Skiff format, where juniors build confidence and progress through skill levels as they learn. Many Australian Open Skiff sailors have gone on to sail professionally around the world.

What level will my child start at?

All new junior sailors begin in Green Fleet, where they learn the basics in a supportive environment.
As their skills and confidence grow, they can progress to:

  • Silver Fleet – able to confidently navigate a racecourse

  • Gold Fleet – advanced sailors ready for competitive racing

Do you race?

Yes.

  • Informal racing takes place every Saturday morning during summer.

  • Formal racing occurs at interclub regattas, where Mini Mariners compete in Green, Silver, and Gold Fleets both across NSW and nationally.

Our coaching program prepares sailors for participation in Open Skiff regattas, under the guidance of the Australian Open Skiff Association, the peak body for this class of boats.

How can we get involved in an Open Skiff Regatta?

You can find details on upcoming regattas and interclub races through the official Open Skiff Association:
https://openskiff.org.au/whats-on/

Are there Open Skiffs available to try?

Yes.
RMYC Mini Mariners have access to Club Open Skiffs for learning. However, we encourage families to consider purchasing their own boats as sailors advance.

You can find Open Skiffs:

  • Second-hand – on Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace

  • Used (excellent condition) – through regatta charter companies

  • Brand new – from TAHE Sport

Do Mini Mariners sail other boats?

Yes.
After mastering the Open Skiff, sailors can progress to the RS Aero, Australia’s fastest-growing single-handed dinghy for teens and adults.

Can we bring and sail a two-up boat?

Yes.
Crews are welcome to bring and sail two-handed boats. We recommend and support the Manly Junior class for those interested in sailing together.

Do you have other boats to try?

Yes.
Depending on seasonal interest and availability, we also have Manly Juniors and Lasers available for both kids and parents to try.

Can parents get involved or go for a sail too?

Yes.
Parents are encouraged to join in — either in their own tender or, for a bit more fun, on a Laser. A few of our parents already sail alongside the kids, creating a fun and supportive environment.

Children often learn faster when they see their parents leading by example.
